When I walk into a building, I see more than just bricks, beams, and walls. I see potential, untapped energy, wasted resources, and opportunities for improvement. Whether it’s a small office or a sprawling industrial complex, here are the best ways to go about improving the efficiency of existing structures

Step 1: Conduct a Comprehensive Audit

Every structure is unique. That’s why the best first step is conducting a comprehensive building audit. This involves assessing the energy, water, and resource usage for the entire facility. Understanding these patterns will help you get to know your building inside and out. Once you understand where inefficiencies lie, you can tailor solutions to address them.


Step 2: Upgrade to Smart Systems

Integrating smart technologies is one of the fastest ways to enhance the efficiency of a structure. That’s why I like to invest in smart devices that allow for real-time monitoring and control.

Installing these systems helps improve efficiency and provides valuable data. For instance, you might notice that office temperatures are too warm in the afternoons, prompting you to adjust your HVAC system accordingly.


Step 3: Reduce Air Loss

Minimizing air loss is the key to maintaining energy efficiency and lowering utility costs. One effective solution is sealing gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and other openings using weatherstripping or caulk.
