Ways To Decorate Your Home in a Rustic Style | the ReFab Diaries

Of the many different interior design styles, there’s something about rustic decor that just feels special. Maybe it’s the warm and inviting atmosphere it creates or the feeling of being surrounded by nature even when you’re indoors. Or perhaps it’s the opportunity it presents to utilize reclaimed materials throughout your space, transforming your home into a sustainable paradise. Whatever its secret may be, decorating your home in a rustic style is a great way to add some charm and personality to your living space.

Ways To Decorate Your Home in a Rustic Style

If you’re looking for wonderful ways to decorate your home in a rustic style and enhance your space’s chic and sustainable appeal, I’ve got you covered. Whether you’re starting from scratch or just looking to switch up your decor, these tips will help you create an inviting and cozy atmosphere that you’re sure to love.

Decorate with reclaimed wood

One of the easiest and most effective ways to achieve a rustic look in your home is by incorporating reclaimed wood. Whether it’s an old wooden door, salvaged barn siding, or a weathered pallet board, reclaimed wood adds instant character and warmth to any space. For instance, you can use barn siding to create an accent wall and accessories, add shelving, or even build furniture. One of my favorite ways to use reclaimed wood is to create a custom headboard for the bed. Not only does it look amazing, but it also tells a story and adds a personal touch to any bedroom.

Bring in rustic charm with a chicken fence

Incorporate a chicken fence to enhance your home's rustic decor. This practical addition secures your outdoor space and adds a quaint countryside aesthetic. Whether used to enclose a garden or create a charming boundary, a chicken fence seamlessly blends functionality with rustic charm, elevating your home's overall look.

Add vintage or distressed items

Perhaps the simplest and most fun way to decorate your home in a rustic style is by adding vintage, salvaged, or distressed items to your decor. Going antique or salvage shopping is much more fun than hitting a big box store, and it often yields much more interesting pieces. When shopping for rustic items, look for old metal signs, antique clocks, worn leather chairs, and ceramic pitchers. These pieces add character and charm to your space and can be used in a variety of ways. You can group them together on a shelf or mantel, or use them as statement pieces throughout your home. I love this tip because it’s a great excuse to spend my weekends at flea markets, antique stores, and resale shops!

Incorporate natural elements

Natural elements are key components of rustic decor. One easy way to infuse your space with nature is by placing houseplants in any empty corners you can find. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also help purify the air and boost your mood. Another option is to use natural materials such as wood, stone, wool, and jute. These materials add texture to your space and are perfect for creating visual dimension.

Embrace the beauty of imperfection

One of the main reasons I find nature so beautiful and inspiring is because it’s full of imperfections. Embrace that same mindset when decorating your rustic-inspired home. Instead of striving for perfection, choose to highlight the rough edges and flaws that make each piece unique. Use distressed or weathered wood in your furniture or display handmade pottery with visible brushstrokes. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures and patterns—the result will be a cozy and inviting space that feels lived-in, comfortable, and perfectly imperfect.
