Building model rockets is an excellent hobby. However, as I’ve learned more about sustainability, I’ve realized there are many ways to make it more eco-friendly. Whether you’re a seasoned hobbyist or just getting started, discover some sustainable ways to build model rockets without losing the thrill of the launch.
1. Choose Eco-Friendly Materials
When building rockets, start by choosing materials that have a lower environmental impact. Instead of plastics, I recommend using biodegradable or sustainable materials like cardboard and balsa wood. Lightweight and durable, these materials work great for small rockets and are much better for the environment.
For adhesives, look for nontoxic, eco-friendly varieties, and avoid glue that emits harsh fumes. When it’s time to decorate your rocket, steer clear of petroleum-based paints, and instead opt for water-based or natural paints. With these small swaps, you can make a big difference.
2. Use Reload Motors Instead of Single-Use
Single-use motors are convenient, but they also create tons of unnecessary waste. Thankfully, reload motors are more cost-effective and less wasteful. The key difference between single-use and reload motors is that single-use motors are made to be used once, while reload motors can be used over and over again.
All you need to do is replace the propellent since most of the casings and key parts are also reusable unless damaged. While reloading for the first time might test your patience, this switch is totally worth it.
3. Recover and Reuse Components
You must recover all the components of your rocket after every launch. For a smooth descent and recovery, use a parachute system. Inspect the rocket for any broken or worn-out parts, and only replace the parts that absolutely cannot be reused.
Once you’ve gathered your rocket, take the time to clean and store it properly. By reusing as many parts as possible, you can enjoy launch after launch without constantly purchasing new materials.
4. Launch Rockets Responsibly
When it’s time to launch, think carefully about where and how you perform it. To mitigate damage to the environment, choose open fields that aren’t home to sensitive wildlife or ecosystems. Bring along a trash bag to clean up any debris from the launch, and if you’re flying with friends, encourage them to clean up too.
Model rocketry is an incredible hobby, and with just a few mindful choices, we can help preserve the planet we love exploring. By trying these sustainable ways to build model rockets, you can reduce waste and inspire others in the rocketry community to follow suit.
